HTML References and Resources Guide

New Html resources references and tutorials will be added regularly so bookmark this HTML references and resources guide.

All of the HTML references and tutorials I have used to learn what little I know are listed here. These sure helped me, they'll do the same for you. In some categories there is a lot of information so I have added some comments to give you an idea of what is at each site.

HTML Reference Archives

Project Cool You'll find a great search engine here that has indexed many of the sites listed in the Reference Archives. Finds the article and you can jump right to it.
The HTML Reference Library A bit of everything here, including free downloadable files.
Introduction to HTML and URLs Take a look, this is a good place to start. The author is promoting a book and most of the information is contained in the book. Excellent information on document types.
NCSA HTML Primer A good HTML start. There is also an HTML guide you can download. The file is 68K if your interested.

Sandia National Laboratories Reference Manual Another reference manual for HTML that is downloadable.
Microsoft's' Sitebuilders Network The best reference area on the net for Microsoft product information and html tags. Excellent for site developers to get beta versions of programs to evaluate. Great site for demonstrations of active X, MSIE specific tags and information for building an Internet Consultancy Business.

  Basic HTML

Web Design Group An overview of the Wilbur or 3.2 standard for HTML documents.
W3.Org This is the organization that sets the different standards for documents. It is a storehouse of knowledge for all information about the 3.2 standard.
Stars.Com Authors Page Part of WDVL this is a shortcut to a list of various tips tricks and tools for basic HTML.
HTML Guru Another author trying to sell a book! Watch it there is another Cookie Monster here!! Some information but it's buried deep in the links.

Elements

HyperText Markup Language (HTML)Good descriptions of all the elements permitted in documents. It's kind of dated, it's from the pre 3.0 days standard but these haven't changed much.
The Useful URLs Page at the HTML Writers Guild One of the best jump stations on the net!! Covers everything from business to design.

Tags

Rob Schluter A downloadable list of all the tags and their attributes. This is a very useful file to have handy for even the most advanced author.
Special Characters in HTML Lists all special tags. Gives a couple of examples with good ways to put these to good use.
Project Cool: Tags Explanations of basic tags with examples.
Web Communications Great list of tags and descriptions.
Quick Reference to HTML Tags Every tag is listed here.
The Compendium of HTML Elements Excellent resource for tag explanations and demonstrations. Very good explanations of browser specific tags.
HTML Crash Course for Educators Text tags Special Tricks and explanations.

Project Cool: Pseudo Imagemaps Explains what these are and how to use them.

Advanced Tables

TableMaker Good descriptions of table attributes and it generates tables for MAC users.
Project Cool: Nested tables How to make and use nested tables to layout a webpage.

Frames

Netscape Frames Information from the originators of this scourge!
Introduction to Frames Good place to start to learn frames if you must!
Frames Decoder Explanations and a frame maker.
Netscape Frames Here is another one if you feel this is really necessary.
FrameShop Produces a frameset from a form. That's all folks, these things are the scourge of the net and I refuse to be party to this. Do you like people to bookmark your site? Forget it with these things!!!

Next Generation Html 4.0 Standard

w3.org Outline of the new standard. Must reading!! w3.org This documents the changes to the current 3.2 standard. A few changes will render some attributes and elements useless as they are being dropped from the standard. If you don't want to have to go back and replace them it is best to know which will be dropped and start working around them now. One of them is the popular center tag. *note use <DIV ALIGN="CENTER"><CENTER>* This will keep you up to date and will work in older browsers that don't support DIV. They will ignore the tag they don't support.

Style Sheets and Dynamic HTML

stars.com Explanation of Dynamic HTML and uses by both Netscape and Microsoft.
w3.org Lots of jumps to specific articles on the user interface and CSS and Dynamic HTML.
Web Design Group A thorough look at CSS and its uses.
W3.ORG This is the standard all you need to know is here in a well laid out format.
NetscapeWorld Demonstrates a combination of CSS Dynamic HTML VbScript and JavaScript to animate a menu bar. Complete with all code and demonstrations.
Zd net Internet Mag Some basic information to consider for implementing style sheets. Do's don'ts and related links. A good place to start.
ZD NET Internet Mag Unfurling style sheets is an excellent tutorial for css in MSIE giving info on do's don'ts and properties that are correct.
W3.ORG More links but this has a good style sheet that shows you what you can do and gives you an idea of how to implement a full complicated css document. For those of you who are wondering how your page will look in browsers that don't support css check it out first using a css capable browser and then in a browser that doesn't it's very interesting.
Netscape World An article on Dynamic HTML and style sheet implementation.
developer.netscape.com   Everything Netscape as far as CSS1 and DHTML are concerned with some channel and canvas mode stuff as well.
WebReview A great tutorial on CSS that came highly regarded and I agree.
WebReview  This table of what works in what browser is a must if you're implementing CSS and DHTML in a page.  Who could possibly keep track of this if there wasn't a page such as this.
MacroMedia This site has several tutorials,articles and resources for CSS and DHTML.
Builder.com Cross Browser compatible DHTML is possible but it requires some thought and following some guidelines. Most of what you need to know is in this article.

Perl, CGI and Forms References and Resources

CGI.PM Lincoln D. Stein is the brilliant programmer who authored the CGI.pm module. There are excellent scripts and examples available from this link. If you are ready to start working with Perl Modules this is the one to learn first!
Matts Scripts Resources Just recently added to Matts Scripts this is an excellent resource for cgi scripts tips and tutorials put together by a well known net programmer.
Perl Primer Well written in plain english. A good place for beginners to start.
C Pan Comprehensive Perl Archive Network is the first stop for learning the Pearl language and CGI everything you need is right here!
Meep.com CGI Programming Made Overly Simple is the title of this article and that sums it up very well.
Lpage Cgi Tutorials You'll find a series of tutorials here that will start you on your way to learning CGI.
CGI Resources Lots of scripts,tutorials and information.
Perl CGI Programming FAQ Great jump off spot to lots of other sites covering this subject.
webteacher.com/perltour Same author as Javascript for Non Programmers. Rob's tutorials are not techie so they are easy to follow and learn from.

Search Search your site using the title tags.
Random Image Display Displays random Images.
Random Links Makes random links.
Random Text Randomly chooses one phrase from a group of phrases requires server side includes.
Text Clock A Text Clock
Credit Card Verifier Verifies Credit Card numbers based on mod 10 Algorithms.
CGI Free A free HTML and CGI editor, some free scripts.
Cybercity If you don't have access to cgi these people are offering 7 MB HD space and use of cgi for free.
Lpage Cgi Scripts Lots of scripts here and they will write a script if you are willing to cough up the dough.
Selena Sol  A good place to get lots of different scripts. The documentation and quality here is by far the best   I've seen for free scripts. In January I looks like servlets will be added to the mix of scripts. Many of the current scripts are used on literally thousands of sites.
Matts Mail List Matts mail list gives you more information about cgis and help to fix scripts.

Java

Cafe au Lait This is the personal site of one of the leading authors on this subject. Almost anything you could think of resource wise is here.
Java World Java Worlds resource page I receive their newsletter it's usually filled with neat tips tricks and resources.
Java World I listed this resource from the Java World newsletter and site because near the end of the page is information on what java functions are supported in MSIE 3.
Java Script Guide Good start for a beginner to java.
Javasoft From Sun and Javasoft a great tutorial on Java.
Netscape Netscape's Java information it tells all the commands and explains how to implement them.
Javasoft  There's an online tutorial, with a built-in option to download as one zip file. There is also a free developers kit with   everything you need to start programming Java Applets and applications.

Java Scripts

Cnet Intro to JavaScript Introduction to JavaScript with lots of resources and jumps to several more articles.
The JavaScript Source Lots of useful scripts utilizing a great design for easy navigation and finding the JavaScripts available by category and uses.
JavaScript Planet Over 250 scripts at this site in almost every category you can think of! First Winner of the "WOD" Most Favored Status. There are scripts added constantly. If you use a lot of these resources I would suggest the update newsletter available at the site.
Timothy's Java Scripts A collection of Java Scripts.
Info Hiway A collection of java scripts. Not overly large but useful.
The Definitive Rollover Script A great tutorial and script for doing rollovers and mouseovers using JavaScript. When you pass the mouse over the title the effect is demonstrated! Way COOL!
HTML Goodies  Joe burns has put together a good archive of scripts with some tutorials as well.
Builder.com "Add JavaScript to your forms": HTML forms are a great way to interact with your Web users, especially when you use JavaScript to bring them to life. BUILDER.COM shows you how to supercharge your forms so they can dynamically react to user input.

 

ASP and SSI Resources and References

PCMag An excellent place to start your .asp studies.Provides some code and examples that have really helped me out in my quest to build web apps using .asp. I started with the main article and ended up digesting all of the links as well.
IUNKNOWN this is the site referenced in the above article. It has a lot of information and suggested reading material for developing .asp applications.
Microsoft.com  The main page for the IIS server which is important if you want to use asp.
Asp Hole  Any thing related to asp can be found here and I just love the name.
activeserverpages.com  You name it tutorials, code, working examples they've got it in abundance.
cclabs.missouri.edu  XSSI tutorials and explanation of syntax however it is only good for apache servers.
Hotwired The webmonkies put together a few pages on XSSI (Apache server only) and SSI which are useful and informative.
apache.org  Apache specific but useful nonetheless with some code examples for using XSSI for including last date modified etc.
AspAlliance Lots of useful information and articles on this site.
15 Seconds is the biggest IIS and ASP development resource in the world. With 3733 pages  there's lots to see and do. Some excellent IIS server information and utilities.
